What are the Most Common Causes of Car Crashes?

Ideally we would love to eliminate motor vehicle and car accidents. Unsurprisingly, most car accidents are the result of preventable human behaviors and factors. Accidents are often caused by a combination of contributing factors, some of the most common include the following:

Distracted Driving

In a recent research study, dialing a phone increased a driver’s chance of crashing their car by 12 times; followed by reading or writing, increasing the risk by 10 times.

Impaired Driving

According to a 2011 Canadian Road Safety report, 40% of fatally injured drivers consumed some quantity of alcohol before the collision.

Excessive Speed

A 2006 British road casualty study showed that exceeding the speed limit was a contributory factor in 5% of all casualty crashes and 14% of all fatal car crashes.

Weather & Road Design

A US fatal motor vehicle study found that 16% of total crash fatalities were weather-related. Rain/wet conditions being more frequent than snow/icy conditions.
